Gene Autry is welcomed home from World War II by his housekeeper and three cowhand friends, who surprise him with a race horse. However, they unknowingly bought the horse from a thief who stole it from a neighboring rancher. Gene sets out to track down the thief and finds a horse trainer, his brother, and an eccentric pal. Along the way, he helps the trainer's brother, a former jockey, regain his confidence and ride in the Queen's Derby to help the rancher pay off her debts.

Gene embarks on a daring rescue mission to retrieve a wild stallion and a speedy mare that has escaped with a jockey's planned ride, flying his airplane to bring them back to safety.
