In the small town of New York, a reporter and his photographer follow an eloping heiress and discover a marriage license clerk who has never issued a license to a couple that eventually gets divorced. The reporter writes a story about the clerk, Jud Holcomb, who becomes a celebrity. The reporter falls in love with Jud's daughter, Nancy, while a local attorney, Lloyd Wilson, becomes a jilted suitor.
