A lone miner, Ralph Burton, emerges from a cave-in to discover a desolate, post-apocalyptic world. He navigates to New York City, finding it eerily empty. As he settles into his new life, he forms a bond with Sarah Crandall, another survivor. Their peaceful existence is disrupted by the arrival of Benson Thacker, who has navigated his small boat into the city's harbor, sparking tensions between the trio, particularly between the white Thacker and the black Burton.
