The Granite State Shoe Company's factory has closed, leaving Doubleday Plastics as the last major employer in Eaton Falls, New Hampshire. The company faces financial struggles after losing a major contract due to lower prices. To stay afloat, Daniel Doubleday plans to modernize and temporarily lay off half the workforce, but this proposal doesn't sit well with the union. After Daniel's unexpected death, his wife, Helen, decides not to sell the company or appoint Production Manager Dwight Hawkins as the new President. Instead, she chooses Brad Adams, the factory's Chief of Machine Maintenance and President of the Plastics Workers Union Local 145, to lead the company. Brad must navigate the difficult task of balancing the company's needs with those of its employees, while also dealing with the challenges of new machines, bank loans, and unsold inventory.
