Author Tony Barratt and his wife Dora return to their country home in Connecticut, seeking inspiration for his new book on tobacco farmers. However, his wife departs for New York, leaving Tony to manage the estate alone. He meets Manya Novak, a farm girl from the neighborhood, and hires her to cook and clean. As they grow closer, Tony and Manya fall in love, but their happiness is threatened by Manya's arranged marriage to Fredrik Sobieski, a man she doesn't love.
