Brothers Giancarlo and Ernesto Barandero flee Italy into France, pursued by the police after Ernesto killed a man in a honor-based altercation. They find work as grape pickers on a French vineyard, despite lacking work permits, and become embroiled in the lives of the vineyard's owners and workers. As Giancarlo falls for the vineyard's Lucienne, Ernesto develops feelings for her sister Léone, who sees the troubled young man as needing care and affection. The brothers' situation becomes increasingly complicated as the police close in, threatening to disrupt their new lives and relationships.
