Tom, a normal boy living with his eccentric grandmother in San Francisco's Chinatown, is thrust into a mystical world when she's revealed to be the guardian of a phoenix egg. After her death in battle, Tom must learn ancient magic from an unlikely mentor, a tiger named Mr. Hu, to protect the egg. Along the way, he teams up with a diverse group of creatures, each representing a Chinese zodiac sign, who can transform into humans while retaining their animal traits.
