In this film, a young man named Davey Fenwick leaves his mining village to pursue a university scholarship, hoping to return and support his fellow miners in their struggles against the wealthy coal owners. However, his plans are derailed when he falls in love and gets married, ultimately becoming a schoolteacher in his hometown. Despite his new role, Davey struggles to find happiness, particularly when he discovers that his wife still harbors feelings for her former lover. Feeling trapped and disillusioned, Davey ultimately decides to take a stand against the dangerous and potentially deadly working conditions faced by his father and the other miners.
