Alex, a directionless individual with a questionable haircut, is introduced to a group of friends - Lizzy, Patrick, and Gnome - at Venice Beach Art School. He becomes inspired to create a black-and-white alternative political documentary about Gnome's quest to free Hawaii. With a newly assembled team of film students and a romantic interest, Alex is poised to bring his vision to life. However, his plans are derailed when Gnome, the one responsible for the budget, suddenly goes missing on the day of the first scheduled shoot.
