In November 1864, a Union train carrying the Gatling Gun, a new military invention, arrives in Greensburg, Ohio. Confederate spies, led by Captain James S. Simmons, ambush the train, capturing the gun and hiding it in an elixir salesman's wagon. The spies must cross Union states undetected, eventually meeting a female doctor and her patient, whose ambulance they hide the gun in. They then seek a Confederate sympathizer in the town of Baxter Springs to guide them through enemy territory to the Confederate lines, all while evading Union soldiers searching for the gun.
