In 1888, the Bower Family Band leaves the Democratic National Convention to move to the Dakota territory, where they encounter Republican residents seeking to divide the territory into two states to gain more Senate seats. However, the family's pro-Cleveland views clash with the locals' ambitions, leading to tension. Eventually, the young couple and their community come to terms and agree to live in harmony, and President Cleveland grants statehood to the two Dakotas before leaving office.
