In mythical Japan, a tailor is appointed Lord High Executioner and must find someone to execute before the arrival of the ruling Mikado. He finds a strolling minstrel who loves a beautiful woman, but she is also loved by the tailor. The minstrel considers suicide, but the tailor offers to solve their problems by executing him. The minstrel agrees to marry the woman for a month, then be executed, but unbeknownst to the tailor, the minstrel is the Mikado's son, who ran away to avoid a betrothal to an old woman. The Mikado's arrival brings the story to a close.
