Jim Slade, a former Chicago policeman, is paroled and moves to a small town to work as a night watchman at a college. A college student is murdered, and the local sheriff suspects a janitor, but Slade begins his own unauthorized investigation. He questions various suspects, including a senator, his daughter's boyfriend, a professor, and a student, while navigating his own troubled past and a new romantic affair.
