In World War I, a British officer named Michael Andrews forms a bond with a mysterious man named John Stevenson after being rescued from Kurdish raiders. Together, they save a Kurdish village and prevent a British army unit from being ambushed. Andrews is injured and sent to a hospital in Cairo, where he falls in love with a nurse named Rosemary Haydon, who is married despite being separated from her husband for three years. Unbeknownst to Andrews, Stevenson is actually Rosemary's husband, who appears at the hospital to claim her. Later, both Andrews and Rosemary's husband find themselves fighting together in a besieged garrison, where their paths cross once more.
