In 1932, Dr. Meg Laurel, a Harvard graduate, returns to her childhood orphanage in the mountains to visit her friend Effie, only to find it closed. Effie is on her deathbed at her home in Eagle's Nest, cared for by the healer Granny Arrowroot.
