Harold Lamb dreams of becoming the most popular student on campus, just like the character Speedy. He gets accepted into Tate College and plans to emulate Speedy's antics to gain popularity, unaware that it will make him look like a buffoon. Harold's efforts are hindered by an upperclassman who tries to make him look ridiculous, and his attempts to buy popularity only make things worse. Despite his struggles, Harold remains determined to join the football team, convinced it's the key to campus hero status. Meanwhile, Peggy, the daughter of his rooming house owner, is aware of Harold's true nature and tries to help him see the error of his ways.
