Milo Terkel's life is turned upside down when he inherits a talking dog named Joe from a late owner. Joe's advice, though well-intentioned, often has dire consequences for Milo. With Joe's guidance, Milo becomes tough at home, causing his wife, daughter, and brother-in-law to leave. Milo then meets Gorgeous Gilmore, a tough cookie who gets physical, and Joe convinces him to get involved with her. After Gorgeous falls into a lake, Milo takes her to his apartment to dry her dress, only to have Joe accidentally toss the dress out the window. The situation becomes complicated when the family returns, the Belmonts visit, and Louie drops by, leaving Milo to wonder if Gorgeous can stay hidden.
