Dr. Michael Corday, a Harvard Medical School graduate, is the son of renowned New York City surgeon Dr. John Corday, who continues to influence his adult children's lives. When Michael's sister Fabienne runs away, he initially follows his father's advice to be cold towards patients, but his approach changes after falling in love with a patient and marrying her. He sets up his own practice on the Lower East Side. The family reunites after a family member's death, and the film tackles unconventional plot points, including unwed pregnancy and a botched abortion, for a 1940s film.
