A 17-year-old girl, Beth, is nearing the end of her school days and lives in Paris with her ailing mother and younger brother. She's frustrated with her boyfriend's suggestion that she explore relationships with other men, preferably those who are less attractive. A doctor, Sugardad, who helps support Beth's family, begins to develop feelings for her. Meanwhile, an older man named Alphonse intervenes when Beth's boyfriend gets into a fight with her near the Seine River. The two later bond over a conversation about poetry.
