Hallie Rogers, a go-go dancer seeking her big break, gets frustrated with being overlooked for a spot on the TV show "Whizbam" and decides to take matters into her own hands. During a live broadcast, she steals the microphone from Glen Campbell and performs a wild dance routine, sparking a new dance craze called the Tantrum. Her newfound fame leads to a management deal with teen tycoon Tony Krum, but she's eventually fired from "Whizbam". Hallie then meets Cliff Donner, an out-of-step teen idol, and the two form a duo.
