In the 1870s, the Karamazov family's dynamics are complicated by the patriarch Fyodor's questionable morals and treatment of his four sons. The eldest, Dmitri, is a gambler who's accumulated debts and seeks a share of his mother's wealth. He's engaged to Katya, who mistakenly believes their union is based on love. Meanwhile, Fyodor's mistreatment of his sons, including his illegitimate son Pavel, leads to tension and conflict. The situation becomes more complex when Dmitri meets tavern owner Grushenka, whom Fyodor had previously asked to marry him. Dmitri falls in love with Grushenka and strives to become a better person for her, while his relationships with his family members and loved ones become increasingly complicated.
