The Breakup background

The Breakup

A family torn apart by mental illness and manipulation, as a father's rage injures his son and sets off a bitter custody battle between his wife and his wealthy and manipulative parents.

A struggling writer, Charles Régnier, loses control and physically attacks his wife Hélène and their four-year-old son Michel. Hélène, who has been supporting their family alone due to her father-in-law's disapproval of their marriage, fights back and hits Charles with a frying pan. The neighbor takes Hélène and Michel to the hospital, where the boy is diagnosed with a broken leg and concussion. As Hélène works to gain custody of Michel and divorce Charles, she faces opposition from her wealthy father-in-law and his hired investigator, Paul Thomas. Paul, who is desperate for money, fabricates evidence to destroy Hélène's reputation, but his plans backfire.
