On her birthday, telephone operator Norah Larkin dines alone, reading her fiancé's last letter, which reveals he plans to marry an Army nurse. Upset, she accepts a blind date with a photographer, Harry Prebble, and gets drunk at the Blue Gardenia Club. After a night of confusion, Norah wakes up with no memory of the events, only to find Harry's dead body and police investigating her as the prime suspect.
