In a quaint German town of the 1950s, a passionate affair unfolds between a devoted high school professor and a captivating cabaret performer, leading to a tumultuous and unforgettable experience.

A martinet botany professor, Immanuel Rath, discovers his students have been frequenting a cafe featuring a cabaret performer named Lola-Lola. He becomes obsessed with her and eventually marries her, but his reputation is ruined and he's unable to find work. He's reduced to performing odd jobs and living off his wife's earnings. When the troupe returns to his hometown, Rath is humiliated on stage and his wife cheats on him, leading to a violent confrontation.
