The 2005 US mortgage housing crisis is told through three interconnected stories. A hedge fund manager, Michael Burry, predicts the housing market will collapse, so he bets against it with banks, who are skeptical of his claims. Meanwhile, investors Jared Vennett and Mark Baum join forces to take advantage of the situation, believing the banks are overvaluing sub-prime mortgages. Two young entrepreneurs, Charlie Geller and Jamie Shipley, also get involved, seeking the help of retired investment banker Ben Rickert.
