Guy Crouchback, a Roman Catholic heir, returns to England at the start of World War II and joins the Royal Corps of Halberdiers, despite being separated from his wife Virginia. He's implicated in a colleague's death and sent to train a commando brigade on a Scottish island. He participates in the evacuation of Crete and escapes to Egypt with fellow officers.
