Jackson Redan, a former Confederate officer, seeks a fresh start in Arizona by buying land and building a new life. He encounters saloon-girl Reva Cairn and merchant Don Miguel Wormser, but his treatment of Reva is cold and dismissive. Despite this, Wormser's trust in him and his forgiveness when Redan is robbed by his rival, Asa Goodhue, serve as a lesson in friendship. Redan recovers the stolen money and, with Reva's help, nurses himself back to health after being shot. He then sets out to stop Goodhue and another rival, Jacob Stint, from cheating the townspeople out of army contracts for their produce.
