Stockholm background

Stockholm

The 1973 bank heist and hostage crisis in Stockholm, which was the origin of the "Stockholm Syndrome", was a bizarre and true event.

A 1973 bank robbery in Stockholm, Sweden, inspired the term Stockholm Syndrome, where hostages develop empathy for their captors. A lone gunman, later revealed to be Lars Nystrom, holds three hostages, including bank clerk Bianca Lind, demanding $1 million, the release of a convicted robber, and a getaway car. Lind, a wife and mother of two, becomes increasingly sympathetic towards Nystrom, impressed by his humane treatment of previous captives, while distrusting the authorities' actions.
