Two Mormon missionary companions, Elder Farrell and Elder Lozano, are assigned to work together. Elder Farrell is a bookish and sensitive individual from Utah, focused on seeking converts and following mission rules. Elder Lozano, on the other hand, has a tough past, having been shot by a rival gang and later converted to the LDS church while recovering in a hospital. As they go door-to-door in Venice, California, they find themselves caught in a drive-by shooting and Lozano helps a wounded gang member, Carl. Carl becomes interested in learning about redemption and seeks baptism, while the missionaries also encounter a homeless man, Louis, who preaches on the beach. As tensions rise, Elder Lozano finds his missionary zeal renewed, while Elder Farrell struggles with an attraction to their neighbor, Holly, which goes against the missionary rules.
