At the Denisova Cave in the Altai Mountains, southwestern Siberia, near the border with China and Mongolia, a series of discoveries since 1984 of unusual human remains have left researchers puzzled.

In 2008, researchers Johannes Krause and Svante Pääbo were puzzled by atypical human remains discovered in the Denisova Cave in Siberia. They assembled an international team to investigate, leading to the discovery of a previously unknown branch of early humans, named Denisovan after the cave.
