A young girl and her family take refuge in the woods to escape the German invasion during World War II. When her father doesn't return with medicine, Sarah's family vanishes, leaving her to fend for herself. She befriends animals in the woods and witnesses resistance fighters' failed attempt to destroy a key Nazi bridge. Determined to make a difference, Sarah decides to take matters into her own hands and successfully destroys the bridge, only to realize later that it won't bring an end to the war.
