During World War II in California, two defense plant workers, Rosalind "Rosie" Warren and Vera Watson, are forced to share a small rental room with two male coworkers, Charlie Doran and Kelly Kennedy, as the town struggles to accommodate its growing population.

Wartime 1944 in California, defense plant workers Rosie and Vera share a rental room with Charlie and Kelly on a rotating schedule. The landlady's family, including her grandchildren and daughter Stella, also live there. Rosie keeps her living arrangements a secret from her fiancé Wayne and plots with Vera to reunite the Proutys. Rosie falls in love with Charlie and they get their picture in the paper, leading Wayne to break their engagement and demand his ring back.
