Gene Autry's horse, Champion, is stolen by escaped convicts Jake Fargon, Pete Reagon, and Charlie Lewis. The convicts had previously been captured by City Marshal Steve Autry, Gene's father, and sent to prison for stealing $30,000 from a bonanza king. Gene sets out to track down the convicts, who have hidden the loot in a ghost town. He finds the loot, as well as the bonanza king and a school teacher, Ruth Lambert. However, the convicts are hot on their heels, leading to a thrilling chase through the abandoned buildings.

In the abandoned town, Gene Autry's stolen horse unexpectedly reappears, prompting him to investigate after being stranded during a stagecoach race.
