Reuben, Reuben background

Reuben, Reuben

A struggling Scottish poet, crippled by a creative block, finds inspiration and a newfound sense of purpose after encountering a captivating young woman.

Gowan McGland, a renowned Scottish poet, is a complex and flawed individual with a reputation for being a boozer, womanizer, and leech. Despite his charms, his life is marked by laziness, poor health, and a deteriorating marriage. His wife, Edith, is aware of his flaws and has written his biography, which may not be entirely flattering. Gowan's speaking tour in Woodsmoke, Connecticut, provides a backdrop for his latest conquests and escapades, including his affair with college student Geneva Spofford. As Gowan navigates his feelings for Geneva, he must confront the possibility that his life may be too out of control for a future together. The fate of his relationship with Geneva is uncertain, and it may ultimately depend on the actions of those around him, including Reuben, the wise and perceptive sheepdog.
