War prisoners, exhausted from constructing a bridge over the River Kwai in Thailand, face devastation when an American bomber destroys their work. In response, the camp commander orders executions, but just in time, a new order arrives, requiring the healthiest prisoners to be transported to Japan. The prisoners devise escape plans as the American bomber pilot, Leyland Crawford, is rescued by the Meo, a resistance group led by British Colonel Grayson.
