In the gritty 1970s New York City, rookie cop Beauregard Bo Lockley joins the 16th detective squad, bringing his college-educated and progressive views to the force. Despite his inexperience, Lockley is assigned to work with veteran detective Richard Crunch Blackstone, who has doubts about Lockley's ability to survive in the harsh world of NYPD. As they navigate a case involving notorious drug dealer Thomas "Stick" Henderson, Lockley's rookie instincts lead him to notice a mysterious woman, Patty Butler, who is actually an undercover cop. When Patty goes missing, Lockley is sent to find her, but he's unaware of her true identity. As Lockley tries to save Patty from her criminal boyfriend, he becomes embroiled in a series of tragic events that threaten to destroy his career and his life.
