In April 1988, a standoff unfolds on Ouvea island, New Caledonia, as 30 police officers are taken hostage by Kanak separatists. The French government responds by sending 300 soldiers to restore order. Amidst the tense situation, two men, Philippe Legorjus, a GIGN captain, and Alphonse Dianou, the hostage taker's leader, engage in a dialogue driven by shared values. However, with a presidential election underway, the stakes become increasingly political, and morality is not always the guiding principle.
