Ben Barton, a veteran of WWI, owns a grocery store in Tuttleton and struggles with rationing during wartime. His frustration grows when townsfolk try to bypass the system and he has to navigate approved inventory with rationing stamps. His biggest challenge is Iris Tuttle, the postmistress and head of the rationing board, who was once his fiancée before they never married due to a misunderstanding. Their past love story resurfaces as their children, Lance and Dorothy, fall in love. Ben's decision to sell half of the store to Cash Riddle, who has ties to black marketers, complicates his relationship with Iris and the business.
