In 1901, a 10-year-old boy named Willie MacLean faces a challenging time in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada. His love for school and horses helps him cope with his family's struggles, including his father's injury and brother's death in a coal mine accident. With his father unable to work, Willie takes on his brother's responsibilities to support his sisters until his father recovers.
