A young black woman named Pinky returns to her grandmother's house in the South after graduating from a Northern nursing school. She's been passing as white at school, and has even fallen in love with a white doctor. However, she's torn between her love for him and her black heritage. Pinky eventually decides to stay in the South and nurse an ailing white woman, developing a mutual respect for each other. When the woman dies, Pinky inherits her property, but faces challenges from the woman's relatives. In the end, Pinky decides to use the property to establish a clinic and nursery school for African American children.
