A mysterious outlaw named Pegleg seeks to build an empire in the American wilderness west of the Mississippi River. To stop him, the US Army sends Lieutenant David Brent to persuade Kit Carson to take down Pegleg's gang, the Black Raiders. Along the way, Kit meets and falls for Caremelita Gonzales, the adopted daughter of a Spanish grandee. As Kit investigates, he narrowly escapes danger and warns the people of Stewart's Post of an impending massacre by the Black Raiders.
