Bobby Ogden, a country music singer/songwriter, hopes to start his career after being released from prison. He performs one of his songs, Outlaw Blues, for country star Garland Dupree during a sound check, hoping Garland will help him after his parole. However, Garland claims the song as his own and starts performing it on the radio. Bobby must decide what to do, knowing his word is against that of a renowned star. The situation is complicated by Tina, one of Garland's backup singers, who wants to profit from her role in the song's creation, and Austin Chief of Police Buzz Cavenaugh, a friend of Garland's, who must deal with the situation as it threatens his mayoral campaign.
