Lem Schofield, a lawyer inspired by Abraham Lincoln's ideals, runs a law firm in a rapidly industrialized city. His partner's son, Clay Clinton, joins the firm, but his desire for quick success and modern methods clashes with Schofield's old-fashioned approach. Clay becomes embroiled with the city's powerful industrialist, J.T. Tapley, who uses his influence to exploit workers and spark a strike. When violence and suffering ensue, Schofield decides to take on Tapley and his political allies to fight for justice and protect the poor.
