Ruth, a widow, feels abandoned by her family in her grand home after her husband sends their son away for his drinking problem. She tries to take her own life, but is foiled by a homeless man named Billy, who is arrested and later released with Ruth's help. Ruth decides to reward Billy by converting her home into a private rehab facility, much to the dismay of her daughter and snobbish neighbors, who hire a lawyer to stop her.
