Mac, a Coca-Cola executive, feels underappreciated in West Berlin and wants a promotion. His life becomes complicated when he hosts his boss's 17-year-old daughter, Scarlett, who unexpectedly falls in love with an East German Communist, Otto. Mac tries to erase the marriage from records, but when Scarlett becomes pregnant, he must find a way to make Otto respectable again to appease his boss. Meanwhile, Mac's wife, Phyllis, has her own opinions on the situation and takes matters into her own hands.
