Kanji Lalji Mehta, a shop owner in Mumbai's "chor bazaar", loses his business in an earthquake and is denied insurance compensation due to an act-of-God clause. He takes his case to court, filing a claim against God. Initially, people are outraged, but as the case progresses, they begin to side with Kanji. A self-proclaimed Bhagwan appears, helping Kanji, and soon other gods and their leaders become involved. The case evolves into an inquiry into the false worship and financial gain of the sages, but Kanji ultimately proves that God destroyed his shop with evidence.
