Nancy Crocker Fleming, a wealthy heiress, can only claim her inheritance if she marries a down-to-earth American. Her late father feared a foreign suitor would steal her heart and fortune. To achieve this, Nancy hires Tony Anthony, a WPA road worker, to marry and then divorce her. However, their plan goes awry when Nancy accidentally takes Tony's dog on a joyride, leading him to "kidnap" her in a desperate attempt to retrieve his pet. This sets off a thrilling cross-country chase between the unlikely couple as they both try to reach Reno and the divorce court before the other files the necessary papers.
