Captain Cyrus Harding, a prisoner of war, escapes with his companions in an enemy balloon during the American Civil War. After drifting in space for days, they land on a desert island, where they must fight against native inhabitants, pirates, and an alien named Rulu who seeks a radioactive material to destroy the world. Along the way, they receive aid from Captain Nemo, the mysterious commander of the submarine Nautilus, and battle against Rulu's mind-controlling powers.
