A 34-year-old engineer, Jean-Louis, has started a new job in Clermont and lives a solitary life, only interacting with colleagues. He prioritizes his Catholic beliefs, seeking love and marriage with women, and has been reading Blaise Pascal's writings. At Mass, he becomes fixated on a pretty blonde, believing she's destined to be his wife. After reconnecting with an old friend, Vidal, Jean-Louis meets Vidal's friend Maud, a recently-divorced pediatrician with a teenage daughter. As they discuss Pascal's philosophies on sex and love, Jean-Louis is drawn to Maud, forcing him to reevaluate his ideals and consider a new path.
