In the 1930s, a shepherd named Kostya Potekhin is mistaken for an international concert star and falls in love with Anyuta. He pretends to be the "star" for her, leading to a series of hilarious musical numbers as he becomes the leader of a Jazz-Band and performs at the Odessa Music Hall and ultimately, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.
